What We Believe PDF Print E-mail

The Chibana church has no creed, but the following is an attempt to capture the spirit of our basic beliefs:

  • We believe that the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ is the Good News, or Gospel, that all people need to hear. Jesus suffered the penalty that our sins should have brought to us. He paid our debt at the cross and was raised in glorious triumph, granting eternal life to those who would believe in Him.
  • We believe that salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. We cannot earn or deserve what God has done for us through Christ. Even our deepest remorse over our sins cannot undo the past or erase the harm already done. Forgiveness is a divine work. It is our Father's gift of love to us.
  • We believe that authentic faith expresses itself in repentance and baptism in the name of Jesus. Repentance is our sincere acknowledgement that God's judgment against sin is just, and immersion in water is our confession of the sufficiency of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus to save us from sin. Though we were dead in our sin, Jesus came to give us life.
  • We believe that baptized believers are called to adopt a life of discipleship that imitates Christ's own. He is our perfect model in all things. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we pursue all that is holy and learn to abhor the sinful things that once appealed to us. By the same power, we seek to honor God with spiritual worship, unity with our fellow believers, and service to our neighbors.
  • We believe that the role of the local church is to glorify God, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. As members of the church we should strive to share Jesus through our lives and our words, encourage individuals to grow in Jesus, inspire a sense of belonging by sharing joys and burdens, and reach out with loving support to people in need.
